Two Approaches to Restore Damaged Teeth | Root Canals and Dental Implants

Jun 22 • 1 minute read

Until recently when the pulp inside your tooth was damaged due to decay or trauma, the treatment of choice was a root canal.  Now, some dentist may recommend the tooth be pulled and replaced with a dental implant.

You should discuss these options and decide together, which solution will best meet your needs.

Root Canal

A root canal is performed to treat the inner portion (pulp) of a tooth and restore its strength, function, and aesthetic. During the procedure, the pulp and bacteria are removed, and the tooth is cleaned out.  The next step is to fill and seal the tooth. A crown is then placed to restore its look and function.

Extraction and Replacement

Extraction is the complete removal of the tooth. Without full restoration of the root and visible portion of the tooth, extraction can cause unhealthy complications. However, when combined with a dental implant, this method of tooth restoration can often last longer than a root canal.

Pros and Cons

Root canals cost less up front and have a respectable success rate. However, it is not as high as the success rate of dental implants.

Dental implants provide a lifetime replacement for teeth and will never decay. However, depending on the condition of your oral health, there is significant healing time.
